(San Benito, Texas)-The No.4 San Benito Greyhounds (2-0) blanked the Mission Veterans Memorial Patriots (0-2) in a lopsided 51-0 win at Bobby Morrow Stadium on Friday night. The Greyhounds took an early 9-0 lead after the first quarter as the defense proved to be too much for the Patriots and head coach Dave Gilpin. “This is my fault,” Gilpin told his players after the game.
Greyhound QB Rodney Rodriguez connected with WR Ricky Perez for two touchdown passes of 34 and 23 yards to put San Benito up early on. One TD pass was a flea-flicker. The Greyhounds led 16-0. Jermaine Corbin added a 85-yard kickoff touchdown return for the Greyhounds.
Defensively, the Greyhounds were potent. LB Mariano Garcia sacked Mission Veterans quarterback Ricky Reyna and he fumbled the ball, giving the Greyhounds great field position. Overall, the Patriots were held to 53 yards of total offense for the night.
The Patriots will open District 16-5A Division II next week with plenty of questions as they meet winless, Valley View (0-2). Last year, the Patriots ended their season 1-6. The Tigers will be playing its first district game since 2019. As for the San Benito Greyhounds? They looked really good. Head coach Dan Gomez will get his team ready next week against Schertz Clemens (0-2) on Thursday night. It will be their third straight home game.
