(Harlingen, Texas)-High School Sports Magazine’s Game of the Week will feature Harlingen (3-1, 1-0) vs Harlingen South (4-0, 1-0) on Friday night at Boggus Stadium. A sellout crowd of 10,000 fans are expected. Harlingen head coach Manny Gomez celebrated his birthday this past Wednesday and said he “feels younger than ever” at 50-years-old. Now, the Cardinals will meet the Hawks with plenty on the line, maybe even a district title.

The last time the Harlingen South Hawks defeated the Cardinals was in 2007 when they finished the season at 12-1 and advanced to the Class 5A Regional Championship before losing to Smithson Valley. Since then, the Hawks have lost to the Cardinals 13-straight seasons. But, this Hawks team is much better in 2021 with new head coach Israel “Izzy” Gonzalez.

Hawks quarterback Xander Casarez leads District 32-6A in passing with 624 yards and eight touchdowns. The Hawks also feature running backs Jeremiah Rivera (389 yards), Carlos Mossboss (170 yards), with wide-receivers Elias Ledesma (254 yards 21 catches) and Rivera (229 yards 16 catches).

The Cardinals will have to stop these Hawks and Gomez loves to coach his defense. It’s what the Cardinals do best. Leading the Cardinals is DE Nathan Huerta, who already has recorded five quarterback sacks this season and 24 tackles. “He’s not a big player, but he plays with a lot of heart. He’s the type of player a coach loves to coach,” adds Gomez. Another player to watch will be DT Pedro Silguero, who also likes chasing down QBs too. He has four sacks this season. In the backfield, DB Albert Vasquez leads the Cards with two interceptions.

Both Harlingen and Harlingen South advanced to the Texas State 7-on-7 Football Championships at College Station this past summer. This means that Bird Bowl fans will see plenty of passing attacks. “I’m proud to be part of this community and to see these two schools come together for our fans to watch, gives me plenty of reasons as to why I love this game so much,” says the 50-year-old Cardinal head football coach. “It’s going to be fun to watch. It’s Bird Bowl.”
