(Santa Maria, Texas)-Head coach Israel Gracia kicks off his third season with the Santa Maria Cougars and he is excited with 2021. “We are excited to be on the field again,” says Gracia. “This is exciting for our community.”

Gracia led his Cougars to the State 2A playoffs in his first season in 2019 before falling to Weimar High School in the first round 35-13.

The 16-2A DI Cougars will attack their opponents with their non-popular running Wing-T offense with hopes of winning the outright District 16-2A DI title in 2021. “We will be in the hunt but, Premont High School will be the team to beat,” says Gracia.

The Cougars will be on road against Marine Military Academy on August 27th to kickoff their season and will then play host to Monte Alto (9/3) and San Benito JV (9/11) if their newly remodeled stadium will be ready for football. “We are adding field turf and remodeling our stadium with new lights and bleachers,” says Gracia. “If the weather permits us to continue the construction, we will feature a beautiful facility.”

Like most teams throughout South Texas, the Cougars played a shortened football schedule because of the outbreak of COVID-19. “We only played one game last year and won,” adds Gracias. “After that, we had to shut down our program because of COVID-19 within our community. It was tough.”

Players to watch this season are returning quarterback, Chris Ibarra along with WR Esiah Gracia, WR Yovani Cruz, OL Matthew Contreras, OL Josue Porter, and LB Jordan Ramirez.
