(McAllen, Texas)-The No. 2 ranked Edinburg Vela Sabercats (1-0) easily defeated McAllen Memorial 42-6, spoiling the coaching debut of Mustang interim head coach, Moses Patterson. Vela HS senior running back Pablo “PJ” Rivera rushed for four touchdowns as the Sabercats punished the Mustang defense with 326 total yards and limited them to 112 total yards. Rivera also caught three passes for 51-yards. Under center, Vela first-year quarterback Chase Campbell (6’2 190lbs) looked real good, after sitting the sidelines for the past two seasons, waiting for his QB debut. He completed 7-of-15 passes for 145 yards and two scores. He also rushed for another 20 yards on the ground. Mustang running back Max Alaniz-Choy rushed for 86 yards and one score to lead his Mustang team. The Sabercats will play host to No.1 Harlingen (1-0) next Thursday night in non-district action while the Mustangs will open 16-5A Division I against McAllen (1-0) next Friday night.
