(Weslaco, Tx)-It was like “Darth Vader” leading his “Stormtroopers” at HSSM’s Football Photoday held at Mercedes ISD Tiger Stadium this past summer.

Weslaco East High School head coach Michael Burget entered the stadium, leading his Wildcats with that “look” on every players face. No smiles, just pure business. “We are ready for 2021,” says Burget.

The Wildcats will kickoff their season as the District 16-5A Division I favorites to repeat as district champions. The Wildcats will be looking to make the playoffs for the ninth consecutive year under Burget.

Last year, the Wildcats won the Class 5A Division I Bi-District title by defeating Victoria East 26-23. In the area playoffs, Weslaco East fell to San Antonio Southwest 32-15.

The Wildcats will need to fill the quarterback position  and Javy Garza could compete against two other incoming candidates.

Offensively, “we just need to fill some key spots,” says Burget. Players to watch are 6’3 tight-end David Trevino, RB Jay Vasquez (5’2 125lbs), WR Omari Bowen (6’3 185lbs), and OL Julian Gonzalez. Defensively, the Wildcats will feature DE Josue Moralez (6’3 245lbs), LB Rangel Silver, LB Joe Lugo, LB Diego Ruinz, DL Noe Castillo, and DL Rodrigo Puentes.
