(Harlingen, Texas)-“I’m excited to be coaching here at Harlingen South,” says new head football coach Israel Gonzalez. The former Harlingen native left Lyford High School and took over the Hawks program this past summer. The Hawks struggled last year with a 2-4 season but returns 32 lettermen in 2021. The Hawks showed their winning spirit this summer by qualifying for the Texas State 7-on-7 Football Championships at College Station for the first time in school history. “That was a motivator for our program,” says Gonzalez.
Players to watch on offense are junior RB 6’1 Marcos Gonzalez, QB Xander Casarez, RB Ethan Garza, RB Jeriah Rivera, and OL Caleb Davis.
On defense, LB Levi Ince (6’0 210lbs) will be the anchor for the Hawks this season along with DB Devin Montemayor, LB Caleb Anaya, DL Issac Torres.
The Hawks will feature a strong running attack and with Casarez at quarterback, and he will bring plenty of leadership on Friday nights.
The Harlingen South Hawks will open their season with non-conference games against Brownsville Veterans on August 27. HSSM picks the Hawks to finish fourth overall in 32-6A.
