(San Benito, Texas)-On a night, where the mosquitos were rampant at Bobby Morrow Stadium, the Harlingen South Hawks swarmed the San Benito Greyhounds on Friday night 28-21 to move into the 32-6A standings undefeated and alone in the High School Sports Magazine’s Game of the Week. The Hawks (6-0, 3-0) will play host to Donna North (1-4, 0-3) this Friday night while the Greyhounds will play in another crucial game against Harlingen (4-2, 2-1) in the annual “Battle of the Arroyo”.
“Those mosquitos were all over me but we played through it,” said Harlingen South LB Levi Ince. The senior Blue Grey All-American invitee recorded several tackles and had one sack against the Greyhounds. The Hawks leads the district in scoring points allowed 209-70. “Our defense plays together and we love our coaches on defense,” adds Ince.
The Greyhounds scored first behind the running of sophomore Fabian Garcia and Jermaine Corbin. Corbin would take in on a 2-yard score to give the Greyhounds an early 7-0 lead. Hawks first-year head coach, Izzy Gonzalez gave his quarterback, Xander Casarez the wings to starting flying and that he did by throwing a 20-yard touchdown pass and then gave ATH Jeremiah Rivera a hand off and he would find WR WR Elias Ledesma open for the score to make it 14-7 at the half.
In the second half, San Benito quarterback Rodney Rodriguez scored twice on a 4-yard and 53-yard touchdown runs to put the Greyhounds up 21-20. The Hawks answered right back with a 25-yard touchdown run by RB Marcos Gonzales. The two-point conversion was good to make it 28-21.
It was the second straight week that the Hawks had to come-from-behind to post wins over Harlingen (28-21) and San Benito (28-21) with identical scoring finishes. (HSSMImages)
