(Pharr, Texas)-“We just want to play,” said several players from PSJA North as they were called back to the locker rooms due to lightning strikes in the area on Friday night at PSJA Stadium. So, the PSJA North and Edinburg North teams, patiently waited, waited, and waited. The District 31-6A match up ended right before midnight. “Our concern is safety first for our players and fans,” said Raiders head football coach, Marcus Kaufmann. Most fans agreed too, as they were order to remain under the bleachers. One Cougar fan was pleased by adding, “I’m glad that our school districts and TASO officials do not put us in harms way. We will wait till this game kicks off.”
Both teams would have elected to have played on Saturday, but other events were already planned at PSJA Stadium. Both teams finally kicked off right before 9:00 p.m. and the PSJA North Raiders scored on its first drive, connecting on a 35-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead. The Raiders defense proved to be too much for the Cougars, holding them scoreless at the half, with the Raiders leading 10-0. In the second half, the Raiders, like the Cougars had to deal with more weather delays and when play resumed, the PSJA North Raiders continued putting points on the board and holding the Cougars scoreless for the entire night, winning 27-0. The Raiders are now 4-1 overall and 2-1 in District 31-6A while the Cougars dropped to 2-4, 1-3 overall.
The Raiders were led by senior running back Issac Gonzalez, who rushed 25 times for 170 yards along with sophomore, Jason Montez rushing for another 120 yards on 17 carries.
