(San Antonio, Texas)-Making their first UIL State Basketball appearance since 1961, the Decatur Lady Eagles (36-2) captured its first-ever state basketball title by defeating Waco La Vega 53-41 in the UIL Class 4A Division I Championships on Friday night at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
Lady Eagles head coach Drew Coffman was overwhelmed with emotions. “This was the longest three minutes of my life and it is amazing,” said Coffman. “Just an amazing feeling to win a state title.”
The defending State 4A Champions, Lady Pirates were looking for its fourth title after making eight appearances in 1994, 95, 2014, 15, 16, 23, 24, 25 but they just could not overcome the Lady Eagles pressure defense throughout the night. The Lady Eagles ended the third quarter with a shot at the buzzered to lead 38-27. At the start of the fourth quarter, Waco La Vega head coach Marcus Willis Jr kept bringing in subs off the bench throughout the night with hopes of creating some balance but, instead, the Lady Pirates watched Decatur win its first school basketball title. Lady Eagles Style Brazile iced the night with a three-pointer to give Decatur their biggest lead of the evening 41-27. Decatur sisters, Bralyn and Sayler Beck combined for 28 points, 17 rebounds, and seven assists to lead the team. This TGIF night belonged to the Decatur Lady Eagles. (denotes titles won)
