(Edcouch, Texas)-The Edcouch-Elsa Yellowjackets (2-0) defense picked off six interceptions with two returned for scores as they defeated Mission Veterans 39–12 on Friday night. With the loss, the Patriots drops to 0-2 for the season. “Our defense played lights out tonight,” said Yellowjackets head coach, Victor Cardenas. The Yellowjackets will play host to the McAllen Bulldogs (0-2) in the McDonald’s Game of the Week.
Mission Veterans junior quarterback Cameron SARINANA had a long night. From bad snaps, two pick sixes, dropped passes, broken plays, leading to six interceptions. Blame it on the Yellowjackets pressure defense.
Facing third and long, SARINANA was pressured, throwing from his endzone looking to find his receiver, instead Edcouch-Elsa SS Brandon Ibarra picked-six the Patriots for a 35-yard touchdown return. He would pick Sarinana again. EE Marcus Garcia added another pick six while EE Troy Barco also returned a fumble for another score.
The Yellowjackets held the high power Pats offense to 249 total yards while EE running back Ayden Garcia rushed 13 times for 106 yards. EE senior LB Gaven Rodriguez sacked SARINANA twice while SS Marcus Garcia added two more picks with a score, and the EE defense had 31 hurries for the night. It was that kind of night for the Patriots. (HSSMimages)
