(Brownsville, Texas)-Brownsville Rivera High School head football coach, Alberto Leal led his Raiders (1-1) to a 26-24 win over Edinburg High School (0-2) on Friday night at Sams Stadium. “This was a great win for our program,” says Leal. The Bobcats took a 7-6 lead at the end of the first quarter after the Raiders missed their extra point but, the Raiders would answered back with another 14 points in the second quarter to end the half ahead, 20-10.
In the second half, Edinburg HS head coach Rene Guzman made some adjustments, surprising the Raiders by scoring 14 unanswered points to take its first lead of the game, 24-20 after three quarters. “We had a turnover but we just need to finish. We also need to eliminate penalties,” added Guzman. “That’s why they call these games non-district. These games prepare us for district games.”
The Raiders would take a 26-24 lead to end the game behind quarterback Ramsey Rocha. He finished the night with 118 yards passing and the Raiders total 297 yards on offense. The Bobcats out-gained the Raiders on offense with 317 total yards. The Raiders will play Rio Hondo (2-0) in another non-district matchup next week while Edinburg (0-2) will meet La Joya Juarez-Lincoln (0-2) in their District 31-6A opener on Friday.
