(Edinburg, Texas)-The Edinburg Vela (10-1) Sabercats advances to the Class 5A Division I Area Championships after defeating Weslaco East 31-9 on Friday night at Richard R. Flores Stadium in the first round of the UIL football playoffs. With the win, the Sabercats will play host to 14-5A DI Champions, Corpus Christi Miller (11-0) on Friday night with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m.
Against Weslaco East, the Sabercats rushed for 257 yards on 39 attempts and passed for only 67-yards for the night. Senior Jamal Polley led the team with 213 yards rushing on 29 carries.
The Sabercats will be faced with its biggest challenge in 2023 as they face Miller who has rushed for 3,017 yards and 38 TDs, including another 3,073 yards passing with 48 TDs. Miller junior QB Trevor Long has passed for 2,989 yards with 48 touchdowns and doesn’t like to run. His six WRs, led by juniors 5’6 Ethan Vela (626 yards), 6’0 Corey Holmes (567yards), and 5’10 senior Jaedyn Brown (582 yards) will be players to watch. Defensively, Miller has 32 quarterback sacks for the season, with another 12 interceptions and 11 fumble recoveries. LB Lamarcus Cullum leads the team with 108 tackles and 7.5 sacks.
