(Donna, Texas)-In the High School Sports Magazine’s Game of the Week presented by Hyundai of Pharr, the Brownsville Veterans Chargers (3-2, 1-0) defeated the Donna Redskins (4-2, 1-1) at Bennie La Prade Stadium 49-10 in a District 16-5A Division I showdown. With the win, the Chargers will play host to the Weslaco East Wildcats (3-3, 1-1) next Friday night at 7:30 p.m. The Redskins will take the week off.
Brownsville Veterans QB Storm Montoya came out strong from the start by leading his team 72-yards downfield, plunging into the endzone to make it 7-0 with 9:04 left in the first quarter. After stopping the Redskins on their first possession, Storm would find Gilbert Trillo for a touchdown to put the Chargers up, 14-0.
On the kickoff, the Redskins were forced to punt again, and the Chargers went to work again, this time with RB Cesar Belmontes rushing into the endzone to make it 21-0 with 1:04 left. The Redskins were shocked.
To make matters worst, the Chargers rushed Donna quarterback Geoffrey LeFerve on fourth down, blocking his punt with the Chargers taking over at the Redskins 25-yard line with :02 seconds left in the first. On the next play, first-year rookie head coach, J.C. Ramirez made the call to hand off the ball to RB Alvin Trevillion and he would bust up the middle for a touchdown to make it 28-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Trevillion ended the night with 148 rushing yards and one touchdown. Storm was just a good with 93 yards rushing and ran in a touchdown, and two touchdown passes. “Being a first-year head coach, I dreamed of this ever since I came to Brownsville Veterans. I’m thankful to our administration for giving me this opportunity,” says Ramirez. “Our defense did a great job tonight by containing that Donna offense.”
