(Brownsville, Texas)-And the Brownsville Veterans Memorial Chargers (4-1) are still undefeated at Chargers Stadium as they knocked off previously undefeated Donna Redskins (5-1, 1-1) in a key District 16-5A Division I showdown on Friday night, winning 60-7 in the High School Sports Magazine’s Blue Diamond Realty Group Game of the Week. “We are still undefeated here at Chargers Stadium,” says head football coach Kelley Lee of Brownsville Veterans HS. “They are a good football team and we played great tonight.”
Great? The Chargers fumbled twice in their first two possessions in the first quarter, both in the red-zone. Lee looked at Veterans RB Bryan Chavez and told him to “hang on to the ball” as he walked over to the bench, distraught. From that point on, the Chargers finished the night rushing for 465 yards on 62 carries and scoring six touchdowns, along with 214 yards passing from quarterback Reece Sampayo and two more scores.
The Chargers will travel to play Weslaco East (2-4, 1-1) next Friday at Bobby Lackey Field next Friday night while the Redskins will take a much-needed week off before hosting the East Wildcats on October 14th at Bennie La Prade Stadium in Donna.
The Redskins had their early-on opportunities after the Chargers coughed up the ball three times in the red-zone, all in the first half. The Redskins were forced to punt all three driving opportunities. The Chargers settled down and scored first on back-to-back drives with Sampayo taking in to lead 14-7 at the end of the first quarter. Donna QB Jake Garcia tied the game at 7-7 all with his eight-yard run.
Things continued to go sour for the Redskins as sophomore quarterback 6’3″ Geoffery LeFevre watched his receivers drop numerous balls and Le Fevre also felt the pressure of the Chargers defense, scrambling to find his receivers. The Chargers went on to score 22-unanswered points in the second quarter and added another 21-points in the third quarter, shutting down the high-powered Donna offense, scoreless, for the final three quarters. Sampayo spotted WR Gerry Gomez open for two scores from 49-yards and 41-yards to take a 35-7 lead in the second quarter. Gomez would end the half with another big play from Sampayo, this time from 31-yards. Chargers RB Eroz Pineda finished it off with a 3-yard score.
