(Brownsville, Texas)-It was a final! The Rio Grande City-Grulla Gators (1-3) gets it’s first win of the year as they held on to beat Brownsville Lopez (0-4) 42-35 at Sams Stadium on Thursday night in non-district action. The Gators lost previous outings against Brownsville Porter (34-19), Hidalgo (27-21), and Roma (55-49). Gators head coach Abel Gonzalez clinched his fists as RB Jason Vega broke loose on a 27-yard run for his third score of the night to take a 42-35 lead and win. “This win is great! Our team deserves this win tonight,” said Gonzalez.

The Brownsville Lopez Lobos did not back down under first-year head coach Shaun Tarantola. Sophomore Eddie Slovak rushed for four touchdowns, including the game-tying score to make it 35-35 all but Grulla Gators quarterback kept his team together, leading the Gators to its first win of the year. He had three rushing scores for the night. The Gators will play travel to play Rio Hondo (0-3) before opening District 16-4A DII on October 14 at Bishop. Lopez will travel to play Donna next Friday.
