(Rio Grande City, Texas)-In only his first season, 31-5A McAllen Memorial High School head basketball coach, Rick Trevino led the Mustangs (21-13) to a 74-61 win over the 30-5A Laredo Martin Tigers (20-17) in the UIL State 5A Region IV-5A Area Championships on Friday night at Rio Grande City High School. With the win, the Mustangs will meet Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial (30-7) in the 5A Region IV Regional Quarterfinals next week. Game will be play on Tuesday at Falfurrias High School with tipoff at 7:00 p.m.
The Mustangs led from the get-go against the Tigers and built a 14-point lead behind the scoring Arian Elizondo, who had a game-high of 29 points. Also scoring in double figures were Jalen Muhammad (11 points) and Alex Hourgo (13 points). The Mustangs will be making its first third round appearance since 2016. (HSSMImages/Ruiz)
