(Hidalgo, Texas)-Ten teams dropped out of the Cope La Frontera Soccer Tournament hosted by Hidalgo ISD and Edcouch-Elsa ISD on Thursday leaving just six teams left to play pool games due to frigid temperatures. Still, this did not stop Boerne HS, last season’s University Interscholastic League 4A State Champions, from traveling south 300 miles to play soccer. The Greyhounds opened with two shutout wins over Mercedes (2-0) and Sharyland Pioneer (2-0). “They are good team,” says interim head coach Raul Hernandez from Mercedes. “We played them right but they kept the pressure on us throughout the day.
The day was cold. Several fans who sat in the stands at Bill Pate Stadium in Hidalgo managed to stay warm with the hot chocolate that was served at the concessions. “We love watching our teams play,” said one Boerne fan. “My son is out there right now.”
Mercedes opened the tournament against Corpus Christi London HS and took a quick 1-0 lead and with less than a minute to play in the half, London scored to tie the game at 1-1 all. The game ended with plenty of cold cramps and a tie. In Game Two, the Tigers met Boerne HS and the Greyhounds wasted no time by scoring two quick goals and held the Tigers scoreless for the remainder of the game to win 2-0.
In more action, Sharyland Pioneer showed that they will contend for a district title as they played Boerne, but, the Greyhounds proved to show more ball control and fended off the weather to win in another shutout 2-0. The night ended with temperatures in the high 30s with Hidalgo losing to Harlingen South 3-1. Play will continue today. (HSSMIMages)
