(Port Isabel, Texas)-“We are headed to the state playoffs,” says Port Isabel HS head football coach, Tony Villarreal. “It’s been a long road, but we are in the state playoffs. We just kept believing all season long.” The Port Isabel Tarpons (7-2, 4-2) came-from-behind to defeat Corpus Christi West Oso 42-28 at Tarpon Stadium on Friday night. “We had two key onside kicks that were recovered by our kicker, Cesar Lopez that proved to be our winners,” said Villarreal.
The Tarpons will enter the UIL State 4A DII Bi-District Championships against, more than likely, Carrizo Springs (9-0, 4-0) in two weeks. The Tarpons will travel to play Rockport Fulton this Friday to end its regular season.
Down 28-20 in the second half, the Tarpons used big plays to knock off West Oso and added a touchdown to tie the game at 28-28. Two more unanswered “magic” scores gave the Tarpons all they needed to seal their win.
