(Mission, Texas)-It was a long night for the Sharyland Pioneer Diamondbacks as they turned over the ball four times in the first half and ended the night with six turnovers as they watched their playoff hopes fade away, losing to Mission Veterans Memorial (6-3, 6-1) 35-0 on Thursday night at Richard Thompson Stadium in the High School Sports Magazine’s Game of the Week. With the loss, mathematically, the Diamondbacks falls (5-4, 4-3) into a fourth place tie with Edcouch-Elsa and Roma, with playoff hopes still looming. Very slim.
In the first half, both teams totaled eight turnovers with Veterans QB Ricky Reyna throwing four interceptions, including one that bounced off the helmet of a Patriot, and recovered by Pioneer. Still, Reyna redeemed himself with three rushing touchdowns, including 219 yards passing with one score. WR Marckopolo Cavazos had a nig night with eight catches for 150 yards and one score. The Diamondbacks rotated three quarterbacks throughout the night.
The Diamondbacks, last year’s State 5A DII Quarterfinalists will play Mercedes (8-1, 6-1) at home with hopes of making the state playoffs. In order for the Diamondbacks to make the playoffs, they must beat Mercedes, and hope for Roma to beat Edcouch-Elsa by more than 18 points. The Edcouch-Elsa Yellowjackets (4-5, 4-3) holds the tie-breaker over Pioneer with their 42-21 win on October 8th. The Jackets plays Roma (4-4, 3-3) tonight. (HSSMIMages)
