(McAllen, Texas)-McAllen High School senior quarterback Hunter Curl passed for four touchdowns and RB Weston Guzman caught a touchdown pass and broke loose on 69-yard run to give the Bulldogs (6-1, 5-1) a 49-20 win over Brownsville Pace (2-5, 2-4) this afternoon at McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium to remain in the hunt for a district title in 16-5A Division I. “We need to stop their quarterback,” said head coach Daniel Pardo, Pace HS prior to kickoff. “He’s a good one.” McAllen HS head coach, Patrick Shelby watched his dogs come out of their cages to take a 21-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. “We did a great job this afternoon and we are fortunate to be injury-free at this point,” adds Shelby. “I like the way our team is maturing.” McAllen WR Hayden Henderson caught two passes for 87 yards and two scores to put the Bulldogs up.
The Bulldogs only loss this season was against rivals, McAllen Memorial (6-1, 6-0) in overtime and now, the Bulldogs will meet La Joya Palmview (3-4, 2-4) on Friday night at La Joya ISD Stadium while the Mustangs will travel to play Brownsville Veterans (5-2, 5-1) on Thursday night. With only three games left to play, the Bulldogs needs to finish with wins over Palmview, Brownsville Lopez, and McAllen Nikki Rowe if they expect to finish in a possible three-way tie for the District 16-5A Division I title. “As for the playoffs, the picture has a lot of possibilities so we just need to finish the next games ahead.” The last time the Bulldogs won the title was in 2013.
