(Weslaco, Texas)-In the High School Sports Magazine’s Featured Game of the Week, missing was Harlingen Cardinals RB Noah Huerta as the Weslaco Panthers took advantage of early opportunities as they open their season with a 49-28 win in non-conference action at Bobby Lackey Stadium on Friday night before a crowd of 8,000 fans.
The Panthers rushed for 298 yards and four scores in 44 carries led by QB Chris Luna ( 14 carries 134 yards) and senior David Garcia (10 carries 74 yards). Sophomore Malachi Rodriguez scored three touchdowns for the Panthers. Luna also added three scores in the air with 137 yards passing.
Harlingen’s Huerta was out with an injury he sustained during a scrimmage but Cardinal head coach Manny Gomez says “he will be back” soon.
Weslaco WR Joseph Leal caught a 59-yard bomb from Luna to score his first touchdown for the season. It was that kind of night for the Weslaco Panthers (1-0) as they will meet the McAllen Memorial (1-0) Mustangs on Friday at home. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. The Cardinals (0-1) will play Harlingen South (0-1) on Friday in the annual Bird Bowl in non-conference action. (Pictured is Weslaco RB David Garcia/HSSMImages/DeLeon)
