(San Antonio, Texas)-Junior Theo Brannan and senior Ian Sedah 6’6 both played the game of their life and it all paid off as the Mansfield Summit Jags (33-7) won their first UIL State 5A DII Boys Basketball Championship title by defeating Fort Bend Marshall 54-47 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas today.
Brannan was fierce less on the court and his amazing performance showed down the stretch but it was teammate and his aggressive defense that kept Marshall off balance. The senior was named the UIL State 5A DII MVP. The win was pure redemption from a previous meeting on December 14th with Fort Bend Marshall when the Jags lost in tournament play 43-38. “This win was much better,” said Prichett.
With 6:05 left to play, Fort Bend Marshall missed an opportunity with a jump shot off the rim as they trailed 35-25. The Jags responded with a fast break that drew a foul. Jags Idan Sedah made both free throws. Both teams did not fair well from the field. Summit made 12-of-27 from the field and Marshall converted 15-of-45 shots. The Jags took advantage of the free throw opportunities as they made 25 at the line. Marshall had 15 turnovers and was fouled 30 times.
The Jags extended their lead to 42-30 after making its fifth three-pointer of the day and the Jags never looked back.
Jaguars head coach Edmund Prichett. raised his arms high in celebration as he watched his Jags stormed the court to celebrate their first-ever state title. “I can’t believe this,” said Prichett. “We won.” (HSSMImages)
