(La Feria, Texas)-“I’m super excited and super proud of these boys,” says first-year La Feria HS head football coach, Craig Foster. “That’s a good ball club we played tonight and our hats to head coach Tony V.” On Friday night, the La Feria Lions defense stopped the Port Isabel Tarpons from scoring the potential game winning drive inside the two-yard line as time expired to defeat the Tarpons 32-27 to take sole possession of District 16-4A Division II.
The Lions QB Andruw Rivera threw three quick touchdown passes in the first quarter to lead 20-0 but the Tarpons would answer right back with three touchdowns to tie the game at halftime 20-20. In the second half, the Tarpons scored only seven points but it was Lions WR who had a big night with four touchdown passes, including the game-winning score with less than three minutes left to play. The tarpons finished the night with 378 rushing yards on 64 carries and 59 yards passing.
The Lions (5-3, 2-0) will now play Kingsville (7-2, 1-1) this Friday night in their season finale at Texas A&M Kingsville Javelina Stadium while the Tarpons (7-2, 1-1) will play host to Grulla HS (1-7, 0-1).
