(Edinburg, Texas)-On Thursday night, the Edinburg Vela Sabercats (8-0, 5-0) looked real good, really good, as they took down the McAllen Memorial Mustangs (6-2, 4-1) 56-0 in the McDonald’s Game of the Week.
From the start, the Mustangs drove all the way to the Sabercats two-yard line and opted to go for the score on fourth down and the Sabercats defense stopped the Mustangs cold. “This is all about the kids,” said first-year Vela head football coach, Ernie Alonzo. “They deserve this moment.”
After that stop, Vela QB Geoffrey LeFevre (18-of-23 for 282 yards 4 TDs) took over, leading the Sabercats to a quick touchdown to lead 7-0 with running back Jonathon Flores breaking loose for a 48-yard touchdown run. Flores scored on touchdown runs of 48, 2, 68, and 44 yards. He ended the night with 197 yards rushing.
On the ensuing kickoff, the Sabercats went for the onside kick and recovered at midfield. LeFevre went to work and found his receiver open for the score to make it 14-0 in the first quarter. The Mustangs then coughed up the ball on their next possession and again, LeFerve took control to put the Sabercats up 21-0 with 1:35 left in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, things got worst for the Mustangs when QB Kane Koy went down with an injury and never came back. He was sent to the hospital. “All glory to God with this win tonight,” said LeFerve. “I hope Kane gets better.”
The Sabercats will travel to play La Joya Palmview (5-2, 2-2) on November 1st with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. while the Mustangs will meet McAllen Rowe (3-5, 3-2) on Friday night. Both games are District 16-5A Division I match ups. (HSSMImages/JulioMontalvo)
