(Weslaco, Texas)-At Bobby Lackey Stadium, PSJA Bears (6-2, 3-0) defensive back Matthew Gamez intercepted Weslaco HS (5-3, 2-1) quarterback Franky Trevino inside the 15-yard line ending the Panthers hopes of a comeback as the Bears held on to win 24-16 on Friday night. The Panthers led 14-0 in the first half with Trevino connecting on touchdown passes to WRs Joseph Leal and Chris Luna.

PSJA Bears quarterback Myles Lopez went to work leading the Bears to 24-unanswered points, including a 35-yard touchdown pass to WR Caleb Salas with 6:17 left to play. Lopez finished the night with 204 yards passing and two touchdown passes. With the win, the Bears are two games away from winning the outright district title. “We played a heck of a game tonight,” said PSJA head football coach Lupe Rodriguez. “Our defense played lights out.”

The Bears will host the Edinburg North Cougars on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. while the Panthers will travel to play Edinburg at Richard R. Flores Stadium in Edinburg. (HSSMImages/Montalvo)
