(Pharr, Texas)-In District 15-5A Division I, down 16-8 in the fourth quarter, Weslaco East (4-0, 2-0) quarterback Aiden Gonzalez paused for a moment and then took off up the middle for a 45-yard touchdown run to make it 14-16, trailing PSJA Memorial with 7:34 left to play.
On the next play, East head coach Michael Burget made the call to go for the tie and freshmen RB/QB Malachi Rodriguez punched it in. The Wildcats had their final opportunity in regulation to win the game but a missed field goal sent the game into overtime.
In overtime, Wildcats RB Margarito Pompa scored on a 12-yard touchdown run and Burget elected to kick the extra point to make it 23-16. PSJA added a touchdown but PSJA Memorial head coach Will Lttleton decided to go for two points. “I told my quarterback that when we would score the touchdown, we would go for two,” said Littleton, Wolverines had coach. East won 23-22.
With the loss, the Wolverines dropped to 2-2, 0-1 overall. PSJA Memorial will travel to play Flour Bluff (3-0, 1-0) while Weslaco East will take the week off. (HSSMImages)
