(Falfurrias, Texas)-The 31-5A runner-up, McAllen Memorial Mustangs (29-7) sent a strong message to their next opponent, 29-5A champions, Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial Eagles (26-8) as they defeated rivals Corpus Christi Miller (19-12) 66-50 on Saturday afternoon at Falfurrias Junior High Gym. With the Eagles basketball players and coaches scouting from the stands, both teams elected to play in Falfurrias again on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m in the University Interscholastic League 5A Regional Quarterfinals. The winner will meet San Antonio Veterans Memorial or Leander Rouse in the 5A Region IV Tournament to be played at North East ISD.
From the start, the Mustangs hit two three-pointers to lead 8-0 in the first period as head coach Rick Trevino made sure that his team would play tough against the Buccaneers. “They are a tough team and today’s win was huge for our program. Our players did an outstanding job,” said Trevino.
Senior 6’2 Danny Canul led his Mustangs with twenty three points, including three 3-ptrs along with 6’5″ Caden Keller adding another ten points and 6’2 Mando Trevino finishing with ten points.
