(Harlingen, Texas)-It was heartbreaking as the McAllen Memorial Mustangs (7-4) watched their season come to an end on a field goal by Harlingen South Jaziel Ovalle from 32-yards out late in the third quarter to win 10-7 in the Class 5A Division I Bi-District Championships. With the win, the Hawks will play on Saturday at Cabaniss Field in Corpus Christi at 2:00p against 14-5A DI Victoria West (5-6). “We are excited about the opportunity and it was a great team win,” said Hawks head coach Israel Gonzalez.
The Mustangs never gave up. With less than three seconds left to play from their own 35-yard line, Memorial hurried to set up a potential game-tying field goal but came up short.
In Gonzalez’s first three seasons, he has led the Hawks to two district titles, including his first bi-district title with the Hawks. (HSSMImages/Montalvo)
