(Edinburg, Texas)-The 5A DI State Ranked No.16 Edinburg Vela Sabercats (1-0) made an early statement early on by defeating cross-town rivals, Edinburg North (0-1) 62-14 on Friday night at Richard Flores Stadium. With the win, the Sabercats will meet another city rival, Edinburg Bobcats (0-1) on Thursday night in non-conference action with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m. The Sabercats struck first on a hand off from QB AJ Reyes to RB Cyrus Golat from 24-yards out to make it 6-0. After a fumble by the Cougars, junior QB Myles Lopez open his season with the jitters by throwing his first interception of the season in single-endzone coverage with Edinburg North DB Horacio Lopez getting the pick from Vela’s WR Jaxson Shupe. But, that turnover did not rattle Myles as he would make it up with a 59-yard touchdown pass, yes, back to Shupe to put the Sabercats up 20-0. On the next drive, QB Myles and head coach John Campbell called a flicker in the back field to Reyes for a 78-yard touchdown sprint to make it 28-0. Up 41-14 in the 4th quarter, Edinburg Vela RB Jamal Polley took off and 59-yard touchdown run to put the Cougars away. Senior RB Dimas DeLeon also scored for the Sabercats. Lopez ended the night with 187 yards passing with two interceptions and one score while Polley scored two touchdowns on 11 carries for 121 yards. Reyes added another two more scores on five carries for 115 yards. Sabercats back-up quarterback Bernabe Gonzalez also took a shot to the end zone on a scramble, finding WR Jacob Trevino open for a 65-yard score.
