(Los Fresnos, Texas)-Entering his third season, Los Fresnos High School head football coach, David Cantu likes his chances in 2023 despite finishing fourth last season with an overall record of 7-5 and a Class 6A DI Area Championship appearance. A loss to San Antonio Brennan ended their state title hopes. SA Brennan lost to Austin Westlake in the state quarterfinals.
Cantu made the choice of starting a freshmen quarterback, 5’9 lefty, Robert Pineda last year. He proved himself by passing for 1,338 yards and 15 TDs. He also rushed for another 908 yards and found the endzone ten more times. Pineda will have RB Gael Palestina (880 yards 9 TDs), WR Josh Limon (495 yards 46 rec), and WR Jason Rodriguez (162 yards 13 rec) to choose from on offense.
On defense, the Falcons gave up only 265 points, including a first round playoff win over 31-6A Edinburg North 21-6 in the Bi-District Championships. Look for LB Jaiden Gonzalez, LB Cade Stumbaugh, LB Carlos Mendez (4 QB sacks) to make an impact.
The Falcons non-conference will be an early test as they will meet 16-5A DI champions, Weslaco East on August 25th at home followed by 6A State-Ranked No.11 15-5A PSJA North on the road on September 1st, and then host a much improved PSJA Bears team on September 8th, and La Joya on September 15th.
