(McAllen, Texas)-McAllen Memorial High School (27-7) lost to Laredo Nixon 60-45 on Friday night, ending their hopes of winning the University Interscholastic League State 5A Boys Basketball title in 2023. The win puts the Mustangs, the other Green and Yellow Mustangs from 30-5A Laredo Nixon in the Class 5A Region IV-5A quarterfinals against 29-5A Corpus Christi Miller this weekend. McAllen Memorial defeated Corpus Christi Veterans in the bi-district playoffs 60-48.

Also headed to the Class 5A Region IV quarterfinals are the Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial Eagles after defeating 31-5A McAllen High School 57-30 while 31-5A Edinburg Vela was eliminated by Flour Bluff 53-37. Both Vets and Flour Bluff will meet in the regional quarterfinals. Both teams are from District 29-5A.

In Class 6A, SA Taft slipped past Los Fresnos 53-51, SA Warren easily stopped San Benito 70-34, while SA Harlan eliminated Edinburg North 67-47. All Rio Grande Valley teams have been eliminated with the exception of 2A Santa Maria High School, who defeated Goldthwaite 50-35 in the area playoffs.
