(La Joya, Texas)-The runner-ups, 31-6A La Joya Lady Coyotes (20-18) missed sixteen three-pointers as the third place 32-6A San Benito Lady Greyhounds (24-13) ran away with the Class 6A Bi-District Girls Basketball title, winning 66-47. “This was a great effort,” says Greyhounds head coach, Abel Moreno. “We did not play too well in the third quarter but I liked the way we finished tonight.”
San Benito jumped out to an early 15-5 lead in the first quarter with junior Jasmin Martinez (5’0) scoring on back-to-back drives and sophomore point guard Angelina Reyes (5’7) ended the first quarter with a lay-up and a three-pointer from downtown.
In the second quarter, Reyes put the Lady Greyhounds up 17-5 and the Lady Coyotes just could not overcome the pressure full-court defense, which led to numerous of turnovers throughout the night. “I’m proud of our team,’ says Coyote head coach, Juan Gonzalez. “Winning 20-games in one season is standard that we can continue to follow next season.” The Lady Greyhounds ended the first half leading the Lady Coyotes 23-10.
At the start of the second half, the Lady Greyhounds continued their pressure defense, forcing the Lady Coyotes to more turnovers. At one point, the game looked sloppy from both sides of the court. “We had to make some adjustments,” said Moreno. “We didn’t play well in the third quarter.” The Lady Greyhounds led 41-21 after three quarters.
Reyes ended the night with 29-points, including three three-pointers for the Lady Greyhounds and Yazmin Bernabe added another 12-points. La Joya’s JoAnn Saenz ended the night with 13 points, eleven from free-throws. Maria Guarjardo led her Lady Coyotes with 17 points.
The Lady Greyhounds will play 30-6A Laredo United (30-5) this weekend in the Class 6A Area Championships. Times and dates to be announced. (HSSMImages)
