(Lyford, Texas)-Two years ago, there was no Rio Hondo High School Football (5-5) program due to the outbreak of COVID19, two years later, the Bobcats are sharing the District 16-3A Division I title by defeating Lyford High School (7-3) on Friday night 20-14. The win puts the Bobcats in the second place seeding and they will play 15-3A DI Goliad (7-3) on Thursday night at San Diego HS 7:30 p.m. The winner will meet 13-3A DI Llano (10-0) or 14-3A DI Cotulla (6-4) in the area playoffs.

Lyford Qb Osmar Martinez seemed unstoppable. In their first possession from scrimmage, the senior broke loose on a 72-yard touchdown run and then Bulldog head coach Jerry Jauregui put his “go for two” fingers up and they scored to make it 8-0 over Rio Hondo. At the start of the second half, down 10-8, Osmar did it again, this time, it was a 80-yard scoring run to put his team up 14-10. The Bobcats answered back with a 42-yard field goal to make it 14-13, trailing the Bulldogs. Sophomore quarterback Ruben Atkinson led his Bobcats team on its next possession to score on a four-yard run to seal their come-from-behind win.
