(Brownsville, Texas)-At Brownsville Veterans Memorial HS Chargers Stadium, the Chargers (7-2, 4-1) stopped Harlingen South 47-15 to send District 16-5A Division I into a three-way tie for first place between Brownsville Veterans, Harlingen South (6-3, 4-1), and Weslaco East (5-4, 4-1). With all three teams clinching playoff spots, all three teams will be competing for playoff seeds next week when Veterans will play Brownsville Lopez (1-8, 1-4), Weslaco East will meet Donna North (2-7, 0-4), and Harlingen South will play fourth place seed, Donna (7-2, 2-2). The Redskins has clinched a playoff spot. The Wildcats holds the No.1 playoff seed advantage with wins over Harlingen South and Brownsville Veterans.

Brownsville Veterans scored in the first quarter with RB Bryan Chavez scoring from four-yards to make it 6-0. The extra point by Tyler Achleitner was good, Chargers 7-0. The Hawks answered right back with a 60-yard touchdown run by Ernesto Garcia and Hawks head coach Israel “Izzy” Gonzalez decided to go for two-points and made it happen with Desmond Cano to lead 8-7. The Chargers kept pounding behind Chavez. He would add another touchdown with 6:00 minutes left in the first quarter to make it 14-8. The Hawks answered right back again, this time, with a 70-yard run by RB Carlos Mossboss to make it 15-14.

This would be the last time the Hawks would score for the remainder of the night as Chargers head coach Kelley Lee made his adjustments. QB Reese Sampayo ended the night scoring from one-yard to make it 47-15.

The Chargers will play McAllen Nikki Rowe or Edinburg Vela in the first round of the UIL State 5A DI Bi-District playoffs while the Hawks could meet Edinburg Vela or Rowe. East could face McAllen or La Joya Palmview in the first round.
