(Weslaco, Texas)-It was the long-awaited battle that Mid-Valley fans had looked forward to in 2022. The Weslaco Panthers knocked off the Mercedes Tigers 25-0 at Bobby Lackey Stadium on Saturday night in Week One of Texas High School football. Weslaco running back Jeremy Perez rambled for 187 yards on 20 carries and one score before some 9,000 fans. The Panthers are coming off a missed playoff bid from 2021 but on Saturday night, the Panthers looked really good. The Panthers rotated two quarterbacks in the non-district contest with Andres Sepulveda and Landon Solis. Sepulveda competed 7-of-11 passes for 74 yards while Solis went 2-of-2 for 31 yards. On defense, the Panthers forced the Tigers to five turnovers but the Tigers did managed to find WR Ram Ayala six times for 147 yards. The Panthers (1-0) will travel to play Harlingen South (0-1) on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at Boggus Stadium while the Tigers will play host to Harlingen (1-0) for the first time in school history.
