(Pharr, Texas)-On Friday night, High School Sports Magazine’s top-ranked No.1 team, PSJA North Raiders (1-0) blanked the PSJA Bears (0-1) 49-0 at PSJA Stadium before an estimated 10,000 fans.
The Raiders were unstoppable as they rushed for 398 yards and passed for another 156 yards for 554 total yards. “Our defense played crazy lights out. We held them to three first downs. I was nervous about this game, but our team was real focused,” says Raiders head coach Marcus Kaufmann.
Raiders junior running back Jason Montes rushed for 140 yards on 18 carries and freshmen Ethan Guerra rushed for another 102 yards on 13 carries. In total, eight different running backs carried the ball 49 times.
On defense, LB Mikey Gonzalez, LB Jose Alaniz, DL Danny Garcia were both credited with quarterback sacks. Kaufmann gave plenty of praise to his defense but he also was pleased with his offense too. “OL Dante Garcia played an outstanding game with pancakes,” added Kaufmann. “He had about 15 pancakes.” Junior quarterback Ale Aparcio led the Raiders with 7-of-12 passes for 122 yards and two touchdowns. The Raiders will travel to play Los Fresnos (1-0) next Friday at Leo Aguilar Memorial Stadium.
