(Rio Grande City, Texas)-A slip and fall did not stop Rio Grande City’s discus thrower Serina Ramirez from winning the discus event with a release of 148’7″ at the 29/30 5A University Interscholastic League Track and Field Championships held on Wednesday at Joe R. Sanchez Stadium. “I slipped and fell forward,” said Ramirez. ” I was lucky that I did not get hurt.” Not so lucky was Daniel Alamilla from Mission Veterans HS. He won the 3200m event but sustained an ankle fracture afterwards while the Corpus Christi Carroll 4×400 girls relay team was disqualified because at the start, the lead runner stepped forward before the start-gun went off.
In fine fashion, Destiny Quintanilla from La Joya Palmview HS dominated the 3200m and 1600m runs to advance to the regional championships. In the 3200m she lapped two runners and raced down the back stretch, crossing the finishing line, breaking two 29/30 5A records. “The wind was tough today,” says Quintanilla. “Running the final 100m was tough into the wind.” She broke the 1600m record previously held by Katherine Ramirez from Alice HS in 2015 with a run of 5:14.42 and did again in the 3200m with time of 11:46.18, surpassing the previous record held by Mabel Fowler from Uvalde HS in 2016. As for Alamilla, he has two weeks to recover before sets off to the 5A Region IV Track and Field Championships to be held at Heroes Stadium in San Antonio, Texas on April 29-30th.
In heroics, the Mission Veterans 4×400 team had a photo finish at the line. After replays and reviews by the UIL directors on site, the Patriots celebrated after they watched they watched the stadium big screen showing their final results. The Patriots were awarded a fourth place finish, beating out two other runners, barely. (HSSMImages)
