(San Antonio, Texas)-The Robert Lee HS (35-2) Lady Steers, located north of Midland, fell to Ackerly Sands HS (36-3) in the Class 1A Girls Basketball Championships held at the Alamodome-San Antonio, Texas 60-33. It’s the first state title for the Lady Mustangs since 1961.
Landry Morrow and Elyssa Martinez led their team on the floor from both sides of the court. Ackerly Sands HS built a three point lead with 6:26 left in the first period and Morrow would take control hitting her second shot to make it 10-7 over Robert Lee HS with 3:15 left in first period. Sands ended the first period ahead 12-8.
At the start of the second period, Robert Lee HS Roxanne Rangel (4’11) took a hard hit as she made her way to the basket. She tied the game at 12-12 with her two bonus points from the line. With the game tied, Robert Lee HS had its chances but kept missing shots and those costly turnovers proved to be the deciding factor throughout the game as the Lady Mustangs won its first state title. “We have been playing together since our fourth grade year and here we are winning a title,” says Landry. Lady Mustangs senior Elyssa Martinez was named the UIL 1A Most Valuable Player. “I’m just so happy these players gave me the opportunity to enjoy this ride,” says Connell. “This team is special.”
Morrow led all scorers with 20 points while Martinez added 22 points and ten steals. Braylee Hood led Robert Lee HS with 12 points. (HSSMImages/Ruiz)
