(Brownsville, Texas)-The University Interscholastic League Soccer playoffs kicks off on Thursday with six teams from Brownsville ISD vying for state titles. Brownsville Porter, Hanna, Rivera, Pace, Lopez, and Brownsville Veterans will all be headed to the playoffs with Lopez, Porter, and Rivera all winning state soccer titles. ”We are proud of our soccer teams,” says BISD Athletic Director, Gilbert Leal.
District 31-6A Champions, La Joya Juarez-Lincoln Huskies will be traveling to meet 32-6A fourth place team, Los Fresnos (11-8-7) at Leo Aguilar Memorial Stadium in the 6A Bi-District Championships at 7:00 p.m. The Huskies (16-3) lost in the second round of the state playoffs in 2021 to Del Rio 3-0.
Other teams kicking off on Thursday are the 2006 UIL State Champions, Brownsville Porter Cowboys against PSJA Memorial at 7:00 p.m. at PSJA Stadium in Class 5A while the former 2009 UIL State 4A Soccer Champions, Hidalgo Pirates will travel to La Feria HS to meet Brownsville Harmony HS. “I’m excited and this team is special,” said Pirates head coach, Zeke Morales. “I still wear my championship ring from 2009.” Last year, the Pirates lost to eventual state champions, Boerne HS in the Class 4A Quarterfinals, one step away from the state tournament.
On Friday, 32-6A runner-up, Brownsville Hanna (13-4-3) will meet Mission High School at Weslaco East HS Stadium at 6:00 p.m. while Richard R. Flores Stadium will play host to two games featuring 32-6A Champions, Brownsville Rivera (17-4) vs Edinburg North at 6:00 p.m. followed by 32-6A third place team, Donna North (12-5-1) vs 31-6A Edinburg HS at 8:00 p.m.
The UIL defending champions are 6A San Antonio Lee, 5A Frisco Wakeland, and Boerne HS from Class 4A. All three teams are back to defend their titles.
