(Harlingen, Texas)-The annual Rio Grande Valley Coaches Association Meet of Champions will begin on Friday, March 25th with prelims to be held at Weslaco, Donna, McAllen, Edcouch-Elsa, and La Feria stadiums throughout the Valley with the finals set for 12:00 noon on Saturday, March 26th at Boggus Stadium in Harlingen.

On Friday, the 6A prelims will be held for the boys division at Bennie La Prade Stadium in Donna with the 6A prelims for girls at Bobby Lackey stadium in Weslaco. All field events will begin at 2:30 p.m. with running events starting at 3:30 p.m. The Top six finishers from each event will advance to the finals on Saturday. In field events, Harlingen South HS discus thrower, Julian Hill could be paving his way to a possible state title after his best throw of 174’7” this year. He will be challenged by Harlingen HS Nathan Huerta (168’7”).

In Class 5A, McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium will play host to the boys division while Edcouch-Elsa Benny Layton Sr Memorial Stadium will host the girls division. All field events will begin at 2:30 p.m. with running events starting at 3:30 p.m. The Top six from each event will also advance to the finals on Saturday at Boggus Stadium. Competitors to watch will be Manny Hernandez from 5A Edcouch-Elsa HS, who has the best time in the 100m with a 10.93 and he will be challenged, more than likely, by 6A Harlingen HS Josue Landaverde (11.05) and 6A Weslaco HS Gavin Silva (11.12) on Saturday. The 5A McAllen Bulldogs boasts the best time in the RGV with 43.30 seconds in the 4×100 relay. Another standout to watch will be 5A Rio Grande City’s discus thrower, Serina Ramirez who holds the best throw this season of 155’1”. She was a state qualifier last year and finished sixth with a mark of 126’10” with the 5A state champion, Made Fey from SA Southwest winning with a throw of 144’7”.

All 4A, 3A, 2A, boys and girls divisions will be held at La Feria High School stadium with field events beginning at 2:30 p.m. Running events will begin at 3:30 p.m. The best four from each event will advance to the finals on Saturday.

On Saturday, the RGVCA Meet of Champions will begin with the pole vault event at 12:00 noon for boys and girls followed by the high jump, triple jumps, long jumps, shot put, and discus at 2:00 p.m.

The Opening Ceremonies and Presentation of Colors is set for 5:30 p.m. with honorees. The 3200m run will follow at 5:35 p.m and the RGVCA will present all Field Events Awards at 5:50 p.m.

All running events will start at 6:30 p.m. beginning with the 400m relays for boys and girls divisions.
