(Alice, Texas)-At Alice High School on Friday night, the 31-5A Sharyland Pioneer Diamondbacks (21-13) were just outgunned by the 29-5A Champions, Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial Eagles 75-47. “They were the better team tonight,” said Sharyland Pioneer head coach, Rene Rodriguez. “We are a young team and I am looking forward to coming back next year.” The Eagles will meet 31-5A McAllen Memorial on Tuesday at Falfurrias High School with tipoff at 7:00 p.m.
Late in the fourth period, junior Quentcy Lewis (6’5″) broke loose and raced down court and slammed dunked the ball to end the Diamondbacks hopes of a possible comeback with 5:56 left to play to make it 72-45. The D’Backs looked exhausted in the second half as the Eagles kept pushing the ball up court with their high-paced, double-team schemes to frustrate Pioneer. Veterans junior post Jordyn Heard (6’7) showed his athletic abilities under the boards with dominating rebounds. He would finish the night with 15 points while teammate, senior Aidan Guerra (5’10) had a game-high of 22 points. Most of his points were drives to the basket or fast breaks on passes from Heard.
The Eagles outscored the Diamondbacks 36-22 in the second half. Pioneer HS Isaiah Reyes led his team with 22 points for the night.
