(McAllen, Texas)-He scored six touchdowns in one game, more than Al Bundy’s four touchdowns, and he also transferred from McAllen High School as a sophomore after his grandfather suffered a heart attack to be closer to his grand parents, and he just signed his football scholarship with Trinity University-San Antonio. Still, he had one more goal in mind…to be an all-state football player like his Grandpa Alfredo Lugo, who played for the 1967 Donna Redskins. Jack Lugo, a 6’2 210lbs fullback, LB, TE, WR, RB, Kickoff Returner, from PSJA North High School was named to the 2021 Texas Sports Writers Association’s Class 6A Football Second team as the Utility Player. “I am real happy for Jack. He finally got noticed for all the roles he played on the field. He played every position that was asked of him,” says PSJA North head coach Marcus Kaufmann. “He helped lead this team.” Lugo rushed for 1,104 yards and scored 18 touchdowns. He also had ten career quarterback sacks and even caught another 243 passing yards this past season. Also making the TSWA 6A selections was Edinburg Vela High School senior, PJ Rivera. He was named to the first team as the All-Purpose Player of the Year. Rivera, a Blue-Grey All-American selection, he helped lead the Sabercats to the third round of the University Interscholastic League’s 6A Regional Football Championships before losing to eventual state championships, Austin Westlake. Rivera is also 2021 High School Sports Magazine’s Offensive Player of the Year. Named to the 6A third team were Edinburg Vela HS Brandon Hinojosa, a 6’3 center, along with Ruben Limon from Los Fresnos HS at linebacker and teammate, Hector Muniz at Utility player. “Anytime you get five players named on the Texas Sports Writers Association 6A All-State selections, that says something about a football program, ” added Kaufmann. The Raiders (10-3) and Sabercats both advanced to the UIL State 6A Regional finals in 2021. Both teams are from District 31-6A.
