(McAllen, Texas)-The Texas Sports Writers Association named McAllen High School senior defensive back/strong safety, Kolton Ottmers (6’0 175lbs) to the Class 5A All-State Second team after he returned three interceptions for scores and intercepted nine passes in total as he help the 16-5A Division I runner-ups, Bulldogs (8-3) make the playoffs in 2021 for the first time since 2017 under head coach Patrick Shelby. He also had 87 tackles for the season. “It was great to have Kolton on our team. He became ball hog and found a way to get the ball. I’m so proud of him. Our team came to together and making the playoffs was a blessing,” said McAllen HS head coach, Patrick Shelby. Also named to the second team were 16-5A DII Tri-Champions, Mission Veterans Memorial DT Mark Champion (6’3, 225lbs) and LB Luis De Hoyos. Champion, a 2021 Blue Grey All American selection led the Patriots to a Class 5A DII Bi-District Championship title, had 88 total tackles and 15 quarterback sacks this season along with De Hoyos, adding another five sacks and 189 total tackles.

Offensive tackle, junior Thomas Domain from McAllen Memorial (6’3 275lbs) also captured second team honors after leading the 16-5A DI champions, Mustangs to the third round of the 5A DI University Interscholastic League’s Regional Championships. “Our team worked really hard. These players were talented. To be recognized by the TSWA is an honor,” adds Moses Patterson, McAllen Memorial HS head coach. Named to the third team was place kicker Jose Medrano from Brownsville Veterans Memorial High School. Fifteen other Rio Grande Valley players captured TSWA 5A All-State Honorable Mentions.
