(McAllen, Texas)-The 31-5A McAllen Bulldogs (31-8) are headed back to the University Interscholastic League’s 5A Region IV Quarterfinals for the second consecutive year after defeating 29-5A Victoria West (19-13) in overtime 49-45 on Friday night at Corpus Christi Miller High School. They will play 29-5A Flour Bluff (25-9) on Tuesday night in rematch of last year’s third round appearance. The Bulldogs won that game 54-47. The winner will meet 26-5A SA Johnson or 26-5A Boerne Champion in the regional tournament to be played at North East ISD in San Antonio next Friday.

Down 42-41 on overtime, head coach Ryan Flores watched from court-side as McAllen HS 1,000 point scoring leader, 6’2″ Robert Caul spotted 6’3″ Jordon Chappell for a three-pointer to make it 44-42. Chappell also added three free throws as time was widening down as the Warriors grew desperate to make points. Sophomore Danny Canul added six points in overtime while Darren Manriquez had five steals and five assists to help lead the Bulldogs to the third round. (HSSMIMages)
