(Edinburg, Texas)-It’s what PSJA North, Harlingen South, and Edinburg Vela expected and it happened. All three 6A schools will move down to Class 5A in the latest University Interscholastic League’s cutoffs. Now all three high schools will wait for the February 2022 realignments of districts, and it looks like the Rio Grande Valley will be getting another 5A district added to the current two 16-5A DI and DII. “We already knew this would happened,” said PSJA North athletic coordinator, Marcus Kaufmann. “Now we will wait and see what teams we will be paired with for the next two years.”
Also moving down are Donna North and La Joya Juarez-Lincoln from 6A to 5A and Grulla falls 4A DI to DII, while Rio Hondo falls to Class 3A Division I. “We might ended up going north again. The traveling really hurts,” says Port Isabel HS Athletic Director, Tony Villarreal. “We could end up with a seven team district with some Coastal Bend teams in 4A DII.”
