(La Joya, Texas)-La Joya High School nailed ten three-pointers against Laredo Cigarroa to win 85-46 in pool play at the La Joya PACK South Texas Shootout on Friday morning. “I just want to thank our administration and staff for making this tournament happen. It takes a lot of work,” says La Joya HS head basketball coach, Eric Montalvo.
In more games, the High School Sports Magazine’s No.1 ranked McAllen Bulldogs defeated TMI Episcopal Academy from San Antonio 64-56, coached by three-time NBA World Champion, Bruce Bowen of the the San Antonio Spurs. “This is amazing,” said McAllen HS head coach Ryan Flores. “It’s an honor to play against his team.”
In double overtime, the Edcouch-Elsa HS Yellowjackets held on to defeat CC Moody 72-68. The Jackets nailed a three-pointer to tie the game to send it into overtime and No.2 ranked Brownsville Pace knocked off McAllen Memorial 72-52 while Katy dribbled past No.3 Edinburg Vela 64-44. The Weslaco Panthers, ranked No.4 by HSSM defeated Corpus Christi King 58-47.
Tournament play tipped off late Friday with McAllen defeating La Joya 68-56 and Weslaco upsets Katy 51-31, while Houston Clear Lake defeated Browsnville Pace 72-62. All four teams were competing in the Platinum Bracket. In the Bronze Bracket, Edcouch-Elsa defeated Donna North 70-40 and PSJA won 33-21 over Mission Veterans.
The 32-team tournament will continue on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. with the championship games being played at La Joya HS beginning at 3:00p.m. (HSSMImages/David A. Amador)
