(Corpus Christi, Texas)-On the third play from scrimmage, RB Marcos De La Cruz broke loose for a 66-yard touchdown run to put the McAllen Memorial Mustangs (11-1) up 7-0 in the first quarter and they never looked back, defeating San Antonio Lanier (9-3) 42-20 in the Class 5A Division I Area Championships at Cabaniss Field on Saturday afternoon. “We played good today and I’m just so proud of this team,” said Mustang Interim head football coach, Moses Patterson.

The 16-5A DI Mustangs returns to the regional championships for the first time since 2011 and will meet 15-5A DI Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial High School (11-1) on Friday at Buccaneers Stadium at Corpus Christi. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. The winner will play Flour Bluff or Gregory Portland in the UIL State 5A DI Quarterfinals.

On Saturday, it was all McAllen Memorial (414 total yards) doing what they do best, they run. De La Cruz had a great afternoon rushing for 133 yards and scored two touchdowns while Max Alaniz-Choy added three touchdown runs and 102 yards on the ground.

The Mustangs will now meet Corpus Christi Veterans this Friday after Thanksgiving in a huge game. For the Mustangs, a win would mean a trip the UIL State 5A DI Quarterfinals for the first time in program history. The Eagles advanced to the UIL 5A DI Semifinals in 2020, before losing to Cedar Park 61-28.

Eagles QB Elijah Durrette (1,674 yards passing 19 TDs) is listed as questionable after sustaining an injury earlier this season and senior QB Aiden Hinojosa has stepped in to lead the Eagles to playoff wins against Brownsville Veterans (28-0) and SA Southwest (26-7). Against the Dragons, Hinojosa passed to 212 yards, completing 16-of-25 attempts with one touchdown. Players to watch are RB Tracy Jones (522 yards rushing) and WR Cameron De La Pena (522 yards 42 catches).

On paper, the Eagles will match-up well against the running Mustangs. However, the McAllen Memorial Mustangs are healthy with a trio of running backs that will give CC Veterans headaches on Friday afternoon. The Mustangs have rushed for 4,002 yards on 524 carries as compared to the Eagles 1,898 yards on 248 carries. Max Alaniz-Choy (1,277 yards), Ethan Castillo (1,040 yards), and Marcos De La Cruz (1,000 yards) will test the Eagles defense. In total, the Eagles have passed for 1,675 yards while the Mustangs will pass (798 yards) if they need too.
