(Mercedes, Texas)-Just maybe, playing on the road in seven games just might have been the best thing for this Mission Veterans Memorial HS (5-2, 5-0) as they defeated PSJA Southwest (0-6, 0-4) 48-14 at home, at Tiger Stadium, in Mercedes on Thursday night. “We cannot worry about what we cannot control,” said Patriots head coach Dave Gilpin, prior to this season. “If our stadium (Tom Landry Hall of Fame Stadium) needs to be looked at, so be it. We still have to play football.”
On Thursday night, the Patriots did, indeed, play football behind the arm of senior quarterback Ricky Reyna, who passed for 240 yards and three touchdown passes. WR Dylan Velasquez (497 yards) had four catches for 66 yards and one score while Marckopolo Cavazos added eight catches for 100 yards with one touchdown. Defensively, Mark Champion (6’2 225lbs) had two solo tackles with a quarterback sack along with DB Felipe Olvera’s eleven tackles. Reyna has passed for 1,462 yards in seven games with 17 touchdowns and has rushed for another 172 yards.
The Patriots travel to play Mercedes (6-0, 4-0) on Friday, October 22nd in the High School Sports Magazine’s Game of the Week at Tiger Stadium in a District 16-5A DII while the Javelinas will be on the road against Mercedes this Friday night looking for its first win of the year. (HSSMIMages)
