(Pharr, Texas)- “They kicked our butts,” said PSJA North Raiders head coach, Marcus Kaufmann. “The Edinburg Vela Sabercats played lights out tonight.” On Friday night, the High School Sports Magazine’s No.1 ranked team, Edinburg Vela (3-0, 1-0) Sabercats knocked off the PSJA North Raiders (2-1, 0-1) in District 31-6A, winning 24-0.
It was the Sabercats defense that made the difference on Friday night as they knocked out starting quarterback Ale Aparicio early in the second quarter, as the Sabercats fought off a tough Raider defense too. The Sabercats went intothe locker room at the half, leading 14-0. “The Raiders are good football team. It’s a shame their quarterback went down early. I hope he will be okay,” said Edinburg Vela head coach, John Campbell. The Sabercats also suffered a set back with senior OL Mark Gomez (6’3 285lbs) going down with a leg injury. Both players will get their results this week, regarding their playing status.
In three games, the Sabercats defense has held their opponents to a total of nine points, and the Sabercats did flex their strengths with two interceptions, two fumbles recoveries, and four quarterback sacks. Offensively, the Sabercats did what they do best, and that’s perform. Senior RB Ted Galvan stole the night with his 72 and 59 yard touchdown runs while DB Cookie Galvan and LB Donovan Herrera had one interception each. Galvan ended the night with 168 yards rushing. The Sabercats also showed three quarterbacks under center, including Bobby Garcia, who rushed for a score to give the Sabercats a 21-0 lead in the second half.
The Sabercats will play host to La Joya High School (1-2, 0-1) this Thursday night at Richard R. Flores Stadium while the Raiders will take the week off. They will return to play on September 24th to play the Coyotes at PACK Stadium in another key 31-6A game. “We will use this week to rest. We had a tough night,” said Kaufmann.
