(Robstown, Texas)-Port Isabel High School head football coach, Tony Villarreal will board his Tarpons (3-0) on the bus this afternoon and head up the coast, as they travel to play Robstown (2-1) in their District 16-4A Division II opener while Rio Hondo (2-1) will entertain Ingleside (3-0) at home along with Rockport Fulton (3-0) coming to Raymondville (2-1). Strange? You bet.

The University Interscholastic League realigned 16-4A Division II to include five teams from the Corpus Christi Coastal Bend area in 2020, but with COVID-19, the district was split, these teams never met. Now, all three Rio Grande Valley teams are set to play tonight against three Corpus Christi Coastal Bend teams. “They are tough,” says Villarreal. “It’s going to be a challenge as we kickoff our season with district play tonight.”

The Tarpons boasts the best defense in the league by holding their opponents to 20-points in three games this season. The Cottonpickers have allowed 63 points scored. “They are good team and I hope this road game doesn’t affect our players,” adds Villarreal. “It’s a long three-hour trip.”

The Rockport Pirates will travel down to Raymondville and they lead the league with 166 points scored against Aransas Pass, Corpus Christi King, and CC Tuloso-Midway. They will meet the Bearkats in a much anticipated showdown. “We are excited about this season. I just hope we get to finish this season,” says Bearkat head football coach, Frank Cantu. Last year, the Bearkats played two games and made the UIL 4A DII playoffs, before losing to Navarro in the second round 52-18.

The Rio Hondo Bobcats (2-1) will be play its third game in two years, after canceling the entire 2020 season. “It’s been a tough transition,” says Rocky James, head footbgall coach. “We love football and this community loves this game.” Ingleside (3-0) will travel to Rio Hondo tonight, undefeated with wins over Mathis, Aransas Pass, and Gonzales.
